As the population of makeup users skyrockets, many people are left to wonder why makeup has become such a major part in the daily routines of thousands of people. One of the main reasons that makeups popularity has continuously grown is the fact that it improves the self-esteem of many young girls and boys around the world. It gives the youth of society the confidence they’ve always wanted by doing the thing they love and enjoy doing- makeup. Another factor to makeup’s popularity is due to the staggering amount of influencers updating different looks and promoting different makeup products which give society’s youth new ideas and inspiration on what they can attempt to portray on their face. Makeup is an art, an art that allows users to feel more confident, with higher self-esteem, while also relieving stress and doing something they love.
Self-esteem is the confidence in one’s worth or abilities; it is reliant on self-respect and the image portrayed to someone about themselves. Due to the harsh restrictions and standards depicted by society and forced upon youth, many people have dealt with self-esteem and self-love issues, leading to self-hatred and sadness about not living up to society's standards. Makeup has helped thousands of teens around the world come to terms with loving and respecting themselves for who they are- makeup gives them the capability to be someone they’ve always wanted to be. Makeup also gives people the freedom to let their creativity cover their face and shoo away the insecurities that had covered them due to society’s standards. Makeup provides youths with confidence and happiness and the feeling of being free.

“Makeup can impact a person's self-esteem for the better or worse. Some may feel a lot more confident with it and others less confident than without it. How each person feels about themselves with or without makeup is up to them, but I believe everyone should be should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin regardless if they wear makeup or not,” Neri Lopez, a recent graduate of Dunellen High School, responds when asked about makeups impact on self esteem.
While using an array of high-end or drugstore products that they had spent hundreds of dollars on, many young teens, as well as men and women in their young twenties and thirties attempt to recreate makeup looks portrayed by their favorite beauty gurus. A majority of these looks have been influenced by beauty gurus that can be found on the YouTube platform such as James Charles, Bretman Rock, Patricia Bright, and Nikita Dragun. People spend hours upon end perfecting looks while watching their favorite influencers create the looks that they are attempting to recreate. As makeup continues to gain mainstream popularity, many of society’s youth hop on the bandwagon, doing their makeup and perfecting their looks which is one of the ways they strengthen their self-esteem.
“Yes, it does for the most part because it makes me feel more put together. I don’t wear makeup every day because I don’t need to nor do I feel ugly without makeup,” says Shivani Balkarran, a current student at Rutgers, when asked if makeup improved her self esteem.
Although makeup has boosted the confidence of young men and women, it has also been seen to ruin the confidence of youth, as well as, portray a false reality to many. Many are lead to believe that makeup depicts a false reality because people believe someone looks one way even though they look like another when they no longer have makeup on their face. Makeup has also seen to leave a negative impact on youth, forcing them to believe they have to adjust their appearance with makeup in order to fit into the rest of society.
The world's first cosmetics were created by Egyptians, in which they used copper and lead ore to complete and create a look. These ancient Egyptians, both men and women, used excessive amounts of makeup because they believed it gave them the protection of the gods Horus and Ra; the sky and sun god. Ancient Romans and Greeks also used their own version of makeup by painting their faces with a mix of ground-up minerals and stones. As time progressed, so did the pigmentation evolution of makeup- instead of entering a world of color, makeup entered a world filled with monotone pigmentation and very minimal color. Pale skin was the talk of the century from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century, in which only prostitutes and lower class women would wear color on their lips, cheeks, and eyes.
