It has approached that time yet again, and the pressure is as evident as ever. While the excitement of summer break approaching in just a few weeks, there are many students that have other things on their mind, a prominent one being AP testing. These testing days occur every May and includes all schools, including Dunellen High School. This year, it has been conducted from May 6th to May 17th, lasting two long weeks for high school students. The AP exams that are offered every year range from a large list, including exams from AP Math classes, Language and Composition classes, Science classes, History classes, Art and Music studies, and Foreign Language classes. These exams have been given to students that have opted to do it, or were influenced by their own school to take them, in order to prove their knowledge on the subject they had been learning throughout the school year.
The AP exams that are given here in Dunellen High School consist of AP Literature and Composition, AP Language and Composition, AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, AP Spanish Language and Culture, and AP Computer Science Principles. These classes are offered only to the Juniors and Seniors of this school, and every student enrolled in an AP class is required to take the AP exam towards the end of the school year.
This year, the test days took place towards the beginning of May. The students were informed on their testing days, and were to report to the library in either the morning or afternoon hours. These testing hours would range from around 8 in the morning, and then again at around 12 in the afternoon. The scores range from a 1 to a 5, 5 being the highest score you can obtain and 1 being the lowest.
The students at Dunellen High School have prepared for many months prior for this time of the year, and are now given the opportunity to prove their knowledge on the topic of their designated AP class. One student that has taken the AP Computer Science exam this year is Senior Taylor Devine, who states “In our class, we would frequently be taught the material by our teacher, and we would have first hand experience being on the computers.” In every AP class, this is the case, as teachers of AP classes give their students lessons prior to taking the AP exam.
If someone is still wondering whether or not they should take the AP exams, Sarah Stevenson’s words should sway them. “I would definitely suggest taking it. If you are taking an AP class, it would look good on your record to take the exam,” Stevenson states. Her advice to taking the exam? “Honestly, just do your best and try not to worry. When you start to work yourself up over it, you’re more likely to fail. Just make sure you know what you’re doing and relax.”
The AP exam can be a long and tedious task, and many students must prepare through hours of strenuous work in order for their efforts to pay off. This school year, may of our own Dunellen High School students have taken their exams, and now are cautiously awaiting their results.
